Biography of Michael Rush

HERITAGE NO : 480
Michael Rush by Dave Dooley and SHS

According to research undertaken by the SHS, Michael was born in St. Helens in 1913, although he has Irish roots. His father was born in County Mayo and moved to England in 1910. Michael played five matches as a stand-off for the First Team. The Rugby League Registers list him as living in Newlands Road, Haresfinch. He made his debut on 9th April 1938 at Featherstone Rovers. The Saints were narrowly beaten that afternoon, but Michael could include the likes of Alf Ellaby as one of his team-mates! His scrum-half partner was the schoolboy prodigy Harold Briscoe, later to lose his life tragically at the end of the Second World War.

Michael played his fifth and final match for the club at Widnes, at the start of the 1938-39 season. Unfortunately the Saints were walloped 0-29 and there are no more reports of him at Knowsley Road. Whether he was a regular member of the A team, we are not sure, or as to his sporting career after the Widnes match.

In 1939 Michael was living in Newlands Road, Carr Mill, St Helens and working as a Coal Hewer and later for Rio Tinto in South Africa. He emigrated after the War and died in Phalaborwa, South Africa in 1977, aged 64.
