Biography of Jack Catterall

HERITAGE NO : 632

This trialist from the Wigan area played in the away match against Hunslet on the 1st December 1945. He was the hooker as Saints lost by 38 points to 5.

Leigh RLFC Historian Mike Latham has also added some additional background information for us: “Jack Catterall has the Leigh Heritage Number #549. As you say he was a hooker formerly with Pemberton Rovers and represented the Lancashire Amateur side in the 1938-39 season. I suppose he lost his best playing days to the war. He was born Wigan circa 1918 and was 5ft 10ins high and weighed 12st 2lbs. Jack made his Leigh debut on 23rd Nov 1946 at Batley and played eight games in all for the club spread over two seasons, his last at St Helens in the Lancashire Cup first round on 4 Sep 1947, when Leigh lost 31-5 in the second leg. In the first leg, they lost 15-0 in the first ever game at Kirkhall Lane, when he also played.”
