Hailing from Wigan [Bridgewater Street, Higher Ince] Thomas was signed on 15th December 1922 from the Wigan club and played his first match for the club 24 hours later, against Keighley at Knowsley Road. This game is quite infamous in the history of the St. Helens Club. The Saints were leading 23-5 when the referee had no option but to abandon the match after it became too dark for play after a mighty thunderstorm. It was replayed at the same venue on 25th January, with the Saints winning 14-7.

The St. Helens Newspaper described his signing thus: �After several attempts, the Saints on Friday signed Melling, the Wigan heavy weight forward, of whom [Ernie] Shaw has a big opinion. Melling is a fourteen stoner and a clever dribbler.�

Thomas went on to play 36 times for the First Team, scoring two tries, mostly in the front row and was ever-present from making his debut in 1922-23 to the end of the season. His last match for the club was at Salford on 1st December 1923, when the Saints lost 0-6. Thomas made 25 appearances for Wigan before coming to Knowsley Road, after signing from Springfield AFC. In 1939 Thomas was living in Beechfield, Almond Brook, Wigan and operating as a butcher. His death is registered in Ince, Wigan in June 1956 at the age of 60.
