Billy Jacques was signed by the Saints in December 1895, during their first season in the newly-formed Northern Union. He was first and foremost a centre threequarter, who could also operate at stand-off and on the wing with equal effectiveness. His signing was not handled well by the St.Helens club. Indeed, they lost two league points after playing him against Oldham on 14th December 1895 whilst he was still a Hull player.

Billy played as a left centre for the rest of the 1895-96 season and appeared in the right centre position during the following campaign, together with some matches on the left wing. A Yorkshire County player with Hull, Billy made 50 appearances for the Saints, scoring 6 tries. His last match was the first-ever Challenge Cup final, against Batley at Headingley, when he played on the left wing, with Jim Barnes as his centre. It was to be his last game for the club. He returned to Hull shortly after.

Michael Ullyatt wrote an excellent history of the Hull club from 1865-1987 and in this, he records Jacques as playing 122 times, scoring 32 tries and kicking 137 goals, for a total of 370 points. This shows the hallmark of a class player, although it is true to say that whilst he was with the Saints, Jacques never really hit the heights.

The 1901 census shows him living in Carlton Street, York, employed as a railway worker, with a wife and two children. When he finished at Hull, he became the Trainer of local rivals Hull KR, certainly by the 1924-25 season. In our gallery you can see Billy with Two trophies won by Hull KR in that season. In 1939 we find Billy living in Providence Row, Hull. Sadly, by then he was registered as blind. Billy died in Hull in December,1957 at the age of 86.
