Biography of Tommy Hayes

HERITAGE NO : 362
Tommy Hayes by Alex Service

A loyal club servant, Tommy Hayes was a pacy left winger, who was born and bred in Thatto Heath. Signed in March 1926, he was mainly a member of the A Team, but never let the First Team down when called upon. Obviously with the likes of Alf Ellaby and Roy Hardgrave at Knowsley Road, chances were few and far between. Tommy made 9 appearances and scored 3 tries. He made his debut against Widnes on 25th August 1928 and his last match was against Hull KR on 6th April 1929 in Yorkshire, when Saints lost 0-10. The St.Helens Newspaper on Friday October 16th 1931 gave some indication of what happened to Tommy after his career at Knowsley Road was over, reporting that he had signed for Widnes, together with team-mate Ernie Shaw. In 1939, Tommy was working as a Glass Bottle Sorter and living in Hayes Street, St Helens. He died in his hometown in December 1974, aged 69.
