Biography of Nick Fozzard

Nick Fozzard had become an established no nonsense forward when he signed for the Saints in 2003. Fozz soon became a firm favourite with the Knowsley Road crowds with his storming runs and solid defence. He also fitted very well into the Saints dressing room as the fantastic run of success in the Super League era was about to write another golden chapter in the history of the Saints.

His debut was one to remember as he seemed to go out full blazes to demonstrate his commitment to the cause and signal a renaissance in his career. That day Nick crowned some powerful runs with a brace of tries. Ironically he only scored seven more tries in the next five seasons. On this score Nick was happy to leave that task to others. His move to Knowsley Road resulted in early success as he starred in the front row as Saints overcame Wigan in the 2004 Challenge Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.

The 2005 season realised a stronger Saints side as they progressed to finish on top of the league ladder under the astute coaching of Daniel Anderson. Nick was virtually ever-present as he notched up 32 appearances for the season. He also revelled in the 75 points to nil thrashing of Wigan in the sixth round of the Challenge Cup, helping himself to a couple of tries in a man of the match performance. The season ended in disappointment for Nick and the boys as key injuries at the tail end of the season dented their hopes of appearing in a Grand Final.

The signing of Jason Cayless in 2006, the continuing form of Paul Anderson and Maurie Fassavalu and the emergence of James Graham intensified the competition for the front row positions. Nonetheless Nick played 20 matches that season and was a key member of the team that lifted all before them that season. However, Nick was unlucky to miss out on the winning performances in the Challenge Cup victory over Huddersfield and the Grand Final win over Hull FC.

However, Nick was rewarded with a starting place in the 2007 World Club Challenge match against Brisbane Broncos. The Saints were victorious by 18 points to 14 and Nick led the charge into the Australian forwards as the Saints stormed back to clinch the tag of World champions on another roasting night in Bolton. August bank holiday saw the Challenge Cup Final return to the Wembley stadium with Nick part of the team who lifted the cup again for the second year in succession as victory over Catalans Dragons was secured. The Saints finished top of the league pile again that season for the third time in a row. Another clean sweep that year was prevented by a top performance from Leeds in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.

In 2008 Nick seemed to raise his energy levels again at the start of the season only to have his hopes dashed by injury as his appearances were restricted to just five games in the campaign. The season traced a similar pattern to the previous campaign as the Saints finished top of the league for a fourth time under Daniel Anderson, overcame Hull FC at Wembley before falling to Leeds in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.

It was announced in the 2008 season that Nick would be continuing his career at Hull Kingston Rovers in 2009 after a fantastic glory run with the Saints. He left the club with the best wishes of the players and supporters. It was always evident that Nick always gave his best on the field and loved his work.
