Austin Donegan by Adrian Lawrenson
Born 27th January 1968, Austin is the son of Joe Donegan, who played for the Saints in the late 1950s and 1960s and certainly showed his father’s toughness and tenacity as a forward. Austin was signed from UGB ARLFC and once again, like his father before him, he touched the fringes of the first team.
Following a debut in the pre-season draw at Oldham on 27th August 1985, Austin had to wait until 14th March 1989 for his full debut, at Salford in a 22-4 defeat, when the Saints were preparing for a Challenge Cup final. Austin made 3 more appearances that season.
The following season, 1989-90, saw Austin make 5 starts in the first team and two more from the bench. The most notable of these appearances came in the marvellously entertaining 27-26 defeat of the visiting New Zealanders on 1st October 1989, when he did his bit as a substitute. Austin left the Saints in the summer of 1990 to join Oldham.
