Biography of Peter Dale

Peter Dale by Alex Service

The word stalwart tends to be rather over-used on occasions, but certainly not in the case of Peter Dale. He was exactly that and, but for a tragic illness, could well have played over 200 matches for the Saints. Born in Sutton in 1869, Peter played in all the prominent matches for the club during the early days of the Northern Union rebellion. He was in the pack for the opening league game at Knowsley Road against Rochdale Hornets and played 37 matches during the campaign, scoring 7 tries. For a forward, that was quite good going in those days. Peter played in every round of the inaugural Challenge Cup campaign during the following season, as Saints reached the final, only to fall at the last hurdle to a powerful Batley team.

He also played in the South West Lancashire and Border Towns Cup final success against Runcorn in 1900. He regularly played over twenty matches a season and was, obviously, one of the first names on the team-sheet. He played his last match away at Morecambe on 23rd April 1902, when the Saints won by 10-9. Peter did not play again for the club. We have to look at the St. Helens Newspaper and advertiser, on Friday 10th July 1903 to possibly explain why.

Sad Death of a Footballer

The members of the St. Helens Rugby Football Club will learn with regret of the death of Peter Dale, more familiarly known as 'Micky.' He died on Sunday [5th July] having suffered from consumption. When his friends learned that he was so ill they subscribed to a fund to enable him to have a change of climate, but the effort came too late. The club too had also come to his assistance in his illness. He was one of the most burly and hard-working members of the forward rank of the First Team and his loss will be felt by the club

Indeed, as Peter succumbed to his illness (more commonly known as tuberculosis today) the club was beginning somewhat of a yo-yo existence between the First and Second divisions. Yet he had certainly made a significant contribution to the club's early development, which must not be forgotten.
