Another player who was thrust into action during the war years and, as far as we understand, no relation to Tommy Parkinson, who played just before the War, this player made two appearances in the halves for the Saints in difficult circumstances.
The game against Dewsbury at Crown Flatt, in the War Emergency League, saw the Saints defeated by 8-37 against a ‘stellar’ home team. Premier, in the St. Helens Newspaper, was quite scathing as to the number of top players who had been recruited by Dewsbury at the time, including star full-back Jim Sullivan. “Saints first test match. Staggering international contest at Dewsbury. Never did so many take on so few”. Premier went on to describe the Saints’ line up in terms of their experience as follows: “Butler, Leyland [2nd match], Bill Fishwick, Hussey [1st match], Newman; Parkinson [1st match], Finney [1st match]; Noonan, Curran, Davies, Garner, McDowell and Cross”.
Clearly, it was a big ask for Parkinson, as Premier continued: “The willing but scantily-framed fly-half could have attacked with a bit more power and drive”. The Reporter correspondent was rather more severe, although it should be mentioned that he was up against a top-class opponent in Dewsbury’s Harry Royal.
Parkinson played his second and last match at home to Halifax on 14th January 1942, when the Saints won 13-9. After that, the trail goes cold. If anyone has any further details of this wartime player, please contact us, especially if you have a photograph or family links.
