This game at Dewsbury was not an easy assignment for the Saints. Manager Eddie Waring had assembled a team of stars from other clubs and, as a result, they were decidedly difficult to compete against, especially if you were in Saints’ predicament with a lack of playing personnel. This was highlighted by Clericus in the St. Helens Reporter, who came up with the headline: “Pygmies and Giants at Dewsbury”. He went on: “The back division was composed entirely of new junior players just collected from seven-a-side competitions”. As for the new full-back: “Morris, also a promising local, did quite good work at full-back, but was in a hopeless position against a combination like Dewsbury. They made try-scoring look easy”.
In that Dewsbury team was centre Jimmy Robinson, an England international, essentially a Castleford player, who guested himself for Saints and Wigan. As for the youngster Morris, he also played on the wing during his second match, this time a friendly, against Wigan at Central Park. Once again, he was facing formidable opposition. As the newspaper headline stated: “Wigan give Saints a friendly trouncing”. As for Morris, it is not known if he carried on his rugby career after the hostilities had ceased. Any further information would be appreciated.
