|Terry Wilson by SHS |
A strong-running second row forward, who was born in St.Helens at the start of the Second World War, Terry was signed from Blackbrook ARLFC in 1959 came through the ranks at Knowsley Road and made his First Team debut at home to Wakefield Trinity two years later, on 30th August 1961. Saints won 10-5 and Terry was in the second row with Ray French, who was making his home debut for the club. Dick Huddart was at loose forward that day.
Terry was a regular in the ‘A’ team, although with the likes of internationals such as Karalius, Briggs, Huddart and Vines occupying the back row berths at various times, places in the First Team were limited. Terry was then taken to Salford by their Coach George Parsons, the former Saints second-rower and signed for the Willows based club in 1963.
For the following five seasons, Terry played regular First Team rugby for Salford. He retired from the sport in 1967 at the relatively young age of 27, as a result of work commitments and injuries.
In the 1970s and 1980s Terry was one of the early coaches and committeemen of the then recently formed Blackbrook Royals junior rugby club, based in Boardmans Lane. Now retired, Terry still enjoys watching the game at both amateur and professional levels.
We are indebted to Mike Wilson for much of this information.
