BIOGRAPHY

Wills by Alex Service

This was a pseudonym for a rugby union trialist, whose name we will never know. Apparently, one of the Saints’ Directors (Bill Simister) had gone south to watch a match and was impressed with the back play generally and must have asked a particular player to come up for a trial. He was put straight into the first team for the away game against Rochdale Hornets on 30th October 1937.

This guy was, apparently, highly-rated and it was a great pity that in his one first team game of rugby league he suffered from acute ball starvation, as the St. Helens Newspaper tells us: “Wills was most unhappy on the wing, getting one pass all the game, making one clever tackle to save a try he was only required to make about three tackles in all and feeling cold and left out for lack of a chance to show his power and his paces.”

He looked yards faster than anyone else on the pitch too and when he had a chance to shine, “he was worked up into an excitable state and fumbled his one chance of scoring.” Wills had a second trial the following week but seemingly was not signed on. What became of him nobody will ever know!
