|Henry Slater by SHS |
A resident of Talbot Street, apparently, Henry made his one and only appearance for the seniors against a powerful Leeds outfit at Knowsley Road on 25th April 1928. The Yorkshiremen came away with a relatively easy 5-20 success, although the Saints’ team had quite a few changes. Henry played on the left wing and his centre was Les Fairclough. Ben Halfpenny, normally a second-rower, was on the right flank, with Bill Mercer at number three. Dennett and Dowdall formed the half-back line.
So how did Slater do? Recorder, in the St. Helens Reporter came right to the point: “Of the new men introduced, I cannot conscientiously say that Slater impressed me. When Fairclough was injured he had sent Crooks away and the full-back got about to the line and held on, to be tackled when he should have passed to Slater to score. But otherwise Slater was not at all impressive”. And so that was that. Henry’s First Team experience ended in frustration and criticism. If only Charlie Crooks had passed that ball!
We do not know much more about Henry’s rugby career and if anyone can enlighten us, we would be pleased to hear from you. An image would also be much appreciated.
