BIOGRAPHY

James Potter by Alex Service

A full-back, whose address was Brown Street, Widnes, according to the Rugby League Registers, he made his one and only First Team appearance at home to Featherstone on 29th April 1939. The Saints won 37-10 and the St. Helens Reporter was quite upbeat about the lad making his debut in red and white: “Butler, naturally, was missed. Potter, from the A team, was tried out but he kicks left-footed and ponderously too but he kept the trajectory low and was inclined to have his kicks charged down….Potter did succeed in getting his backs moving and may be counted a useful and successful understudy.”

Whatever happened to him, we do not know. He must have duly returned to the A team following the return of Albert Butler, but the War will have had an influence too, somewhere along the line. If you have any information about this player, we would like to hear from you.
