BIOGRAPHY

Harold Pinner by Dave Dooley:

Harry Pinner was one of the best ball distributors ever to don a Saints` jersey. His brilliant reading of the game, timely passes and tactical kicking were often the difference between Saints and the opposition. After graduating through the Saints Colts, Harry burst onto the scene at the conclusion of the treble winning 1975/76 season. The team were faced with a backlog of fixtures during April 1976 and Harry was pitched into the first team. Supporters soon became aware of his extensive abilities as he seemed to take charge as try-making moves readily emanated from his attacking and probing style of play that created so many breaks for his colleagues. He was to become one of Saints` all time greats in the key loose forward position.

It did not take Harry a long time to find himself on the score-sheet. The day after Saints had scraped home in the Challenge Cup semi-final against Keighley, Saints had a league fixture at Warrington. Eric Ashton used the opportunity top blood youngsters like Liptrot, Ashton, Billy Platt and Harry. With some players backing up from the previous day`s turmoil, few gave Saints a chance. The young blond-haired nineteen year-old Harry was revelation, helping himself to a great try and inspiring his colleagues to come away with a 16 points to 10 victory. His form during the month was so impressive that he was selected as substitute for the Premiership Final, as Saints out-powered Salford by 15 points to 2.

For the next ten seasons Harry was an automatic choice for the number 13 jersey. His full repertoire was on view during the 1976/7 season as he made countless breaks, scored tries, kicked goals and was on hand to land a couple of drop goals. By the end of the season he was selected again for the Premiership Final, this time in his regular starting position. Notwithstanding the result and watching captain Billy Benyon lift the trophy it was a day to forget for Harry. Just after half time he was involved in an unseemly brawl with Wire stand-off Alan Gwilliam. Both players were dismissed but Warrington were unable to reorganise their play and Saints, led by Geoff Pimblett, went on a second half rampage.

Harry was even more dominant the following season when Saints played some of their best ever football but the trophy cabinet was unusually bare by the end of the campaign. The classic 1978 Challenge Cup Final against Leeds started with a Pinner special, an up and under kick that led to the opening try for Graham Liptrot. Harry and his colleagues were desperate as Leeds clawed back a 10 points deficit to deny Saints another Challenge Cup victory. In terms of try scoring this was Harry`s best ever season with 20 tries as Saints raced in for another 1000 points season. Pinner was often on hand to spot a gap close to the line or follow up a break for another Saints score. This haul included 4 braces against Deswbury, Featherstone Rovers, Bramley and Salford. As Saints entered a period of relative decline in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Harry bore more of the responsibility on the field. Very often Mr Pinner was a barometer against which you could judge the Saints performance. So much revolved around the loose forward that results often depended upon how dominant Harry was in any particular game. Harry perfected his party piece during this era - the drop goal. He dropped 10 goals during the 1978-79 season and in the following season he readily accepted the role of goal-kicker following injuries to new signing Clive Griffiths, booting 72 goals in the season including nine goals and a try in the match against Rochdale Hornets. Headlining exploits included Harry`s 4 goals and 3 drop goals in the away win over Castleford in the 1981/2 season and a try and four drop goals on the 25th of February 1984 as Saints disposed of Hull by 24 points to 14. That season Pinner had a season best total of 14 drop goals.

Harry had been given the task of leading the Saints as the team was rebuilt around a nucleus of young, local exciting players. The arrival of Mal Meninga in the 1984/5 season signalled the backroom staff at Knowlsey Road to order a few tins of Brasso. The spotlight was very much on the `Wizard of Aus` that year and this allowed Harry adopt a more relaxed approach in his on the field leadership and organisation. Saints open style of play saw Harry lift the Lancashire Cup and the Premiership Trophy that season. Whilst `Big Mal` was an inspiration in both Finals, Harry`s direction and breaks created a host of tries that year and a cheeky dummy, break and swerve around four bemused Rovers sealed the Premiership win over Hull KR. Such inspiration brought Harry the supreme accolade in 1985 as he was selected to lead Great Britain in the drawn series against New Zealand. In all Harry won 6 GB caps, three for England and in addition played 7 times for Lancashire.

The introduction of Alex Murphy as coach during the 1985/86 season signalled the end for Harry as he fell out of favour when Saints embarked on a spectacular 13 match- winning streak in the league. In October 1986, Harry was transferred to Widnes as part of an player exchange involving John Fieldhouse. Harry was plunged into the central role on the field at Knowsley Road for a decade. He always had an old head on young shoulders and stood up to the challenge of leading a youthful team. He was charged with the task of returning Saints to their former glories and succeeded with great credit.
