BIOGRAPHY

William Mercer by Dave Dooley:
Bill Mercer, born in St Helens in 1906, played over 300 matches in the first great era for the Saints during the 1920s and 1930s. In 311 matches for the Saints Bill scored 75 tries, kicked no goals for a total points aggregate of 225 points. Bill was a local product with great hands and deceptive turn of speed. He made his debut for the first team as part of a 15 points to 3 home victory over Batley on the 26th September, 1925.

In the 1925/26 season Bill scored his first try for the club away against Bradford Northern in a 25 points to six win on the 14th April, 1926. The following season Bill established himself as a regular playing another 56 games to the end of the 1927/28 season. On the 17th December 1927 Bill scored a hat trick of tries in the 37 points to 11 win over Leigh. The following season Bill went one better, notching four tries in the 47 points to five demolition of Bradford (30/3/1929). In that season he scored a best-ever 16 tries from 44 games. Bill played at centre where he forged a great understanding with the masterful winger Roy Hardgrave. Mercer also played the first St Helens team to appear at Wembley albeit on the losing side as the exhausted Saints dipped to rank outsiders Widnes by 10 points to three. In the semi-final replay match of that same competition Bill scored a scorching try in the 22 points to 10 victory over Wigan at Mather Lane, Leigh. That season he scored 15 tries but made many more for his winger partners. Despite finishing top of the league that season Saints crashed out of the Championship semi-final as the fixture backlog proved too much with the team playing 10 games in 20 days of April 1930 leading up to the Championship semi-final and Challenge Cup Final. Bill had the consolation of a winners medal for the Lancashire League.

However, William playing inside Roy Hardgrave was a member of the 1931-32 Championship winning team that defeated Huddersfield by 9 points to 5. The same season saw Bill collect another Lancashire League winners medal as Saints finished top of the pile again.

In a representative capacity William won caps for both Lancashire and England. Bill was club captain during the Saints diamond jubilee season of 1935/36 although he did not turn out for the first team. With only two matches played in the dark season of 1936/37, Bill was reaching the end of a long and distinguished career.

His final match for the Club was against Warrington on the 6th November, 1937, after which he retired from the game. However, he did give many more years of service as trainer/coach to the Saints `A` team. Bill worked for St Helens Council as a joiner, where one of his apprentices in the mid-1950s was a certain Alex Murphy.

Bill Mercer by Alex Service

William Mercer signed for the Saints on 31 December 1924 from local junior rugby and played 311 matches for the club in the first great era of success from the mid 1920s to the early 1930s. A superb all-round centre, with excellent handling skills and a deceptive turn of pace, Bill scored 75 tries during his twelve years at Knowsley Road, picking up county and international honours along the way. He made his debut in the 15-3 victory against Batley on 26 September 1925 and soon established himself as a regular in what was becoming a real stellar line-up. Bill was to become an integral member of the Team of all the Talents in 1929/30, which thrilled the crowds with its vibrant brand of attacking football. His partnership with New Zealander Roy Hardgrave on the left proved to be exceptional, matching the feats of Lewis and Ellaby on the other flank. Although the team won the Lancashire League title, they were beaten by Leeds in the semi-final of the Championship and by Widnes at Wembley in the Challenge Cup Final, despite a magnificent individual performance by Mercer in the 22-10 semi-final success against Wigan at Mather Lane, Leigh.

One of the reasons for the Saints’ demise was a backlog of club fixtures at the end of the season 10 matches in 20 days in April - with several players involved in representative football. Bill Mercer made his debut for Lancashire against Cumberland at Whitehaven on 29 October 1929, with the legendary Alf Ellaby outside him, who raced in for three sizzling touchdowns in Lancashire’s 15-7 success! Two more appearances alongside Ellaby, against Yorkshire and Glamorgan/Monmouthshire brought further victories and the County Championship to Lancashire. Mercer made five county appearances overall and also played for England against Other Nationalities at Thrum Hall on 7 April 1930, in a 19-35 defeat, when Saints’ Kiwi forwards Lou Hutt and Trevor Hall were members of the opposition.

Bill’s domestic achievements continued by providing Roy Hardgrave the ammunition to score a staggering 44 tries in 1931/32, as the Saints won their last ten matches of the campaign to lift the Lancashire League trophy the second such honour for Bill Mercer. Without the likes of Ellaby and Fildes, who were on the Australian tour, the Saints went on to become League Champions with a superb 9-5 performance against Huddersfield at Wakefield Trinity’s Belle Vue ground. Mercer picked up a loose ball on the left-hand side and fed stand-off Jack Garvey, who made the decisive break for Tom Winnard’s brilliant match-winning try. Club Captain in his later years, Bill played his final match for the Saints against Warrington on 6 November 1937 and went on to give many more years of service as Trainer-Coach to the ‘A’ Team at Knowsley Road, where his knowledge and expertise was put to full use! A letter from Bill was received by the club in early September 1963 stating that he was unable to continue as Club Scout. The Boardroom Minutes of 3rd September 1963 record that: "It was agreed that in appreciation of his service as player, coach and scout, he be made into a Life Member of the club."
