BIOGRAPHY

Harry May by Alex Service

JH ‘Harry’ May does not appear to be a relation of JF ‘James’ May, the famous referee and Saints’ Chairman in the 1920s. His name is bandied about in the newspapers in the early 1890s as a player for the St.Helens Recreation and Runcorn. He also represented Cheshire. Harry joined the professional Saints club from Altrincham for the start of the 1896-97 campaign and played in the first two matches of the season. The opener, at home to Rochdale Hornets, was won by 6-5. The second, at Salford, on 19th September 1996 was a scoreless draw. Harry played centre in both matches, firstly to Tom Sudlow and then Bob Doherty. After his brief sojourn at Knowsley Road, Harry settled down to work as a joiner in Cheadle, Cheshire. If anyone has any information about this player, we would like to hear from you.
