The St. Helens Newspaper on 6th March 1945 reported on the match at Belle Vue, against Wakefield Trinity and the headline was: “Saints’ new forward plays well at Wakefield”. The [un-named] correspondent then highlighted the difficulties of wartime rugby league: “The party gets smaller week by week. If things go on at this rate St. Helens will nearly be able to go to away matches on their bikes. So many players have to be picked up at some place or other that the bus now looks almost empty when it leaves Victoria Square. Notwithstanding the picking up process, or perhaps because of it, St. Helens had only twelve players when they arrived at Wakefield, from whom they borrowed Lloyd, a young front-row forward who had got an afternoon free from his Army duties. He did his best for us and we are very much obliged to him”.
Praise indeed for another ‘one-match’ player who filled in during the war. Saints lost 36-7 but it might have been more with just twelve men! The front-row that day was Norman Thompson, evergreen hooker Jimmy Goodier and Lloyd. Can you help the SHS by supplying his first name, a photograph or any other personal or playing details?
