BIOGRAPHY

Jimmy Kilgannon by Alex Service

Jimmy Kilgannon lived in Gertrude Street and originally played for Saints’ great rivals, St. Helens Recs. However, the 1911 Census suggests that he originally came from Lyon Street, where so many Recs’ players came from! His father was a ‘chemical labourer’ who was born in County Mayo, Ireland. By all accounts, Jimmy was quite a clever player with Recs and it was a bit of a surprise to see this promising centre transferred to Liverpool Stanley, although by the mid 1930s, Recs, like Saints themselves, were desperately short of money!

Jimmy made a successful start to his Recs’ career with a try on debut against Halifax on 23rd March 1935. He showed tenacious tackling ability and, in his 13 matches for Recs, scored three tries. His Heritage Number at City Road is 150. Jimmy turned out for Leigh [Heritage Number 496] and Dewsbury, during the war years, plus his four matches for the Saints during 1944-45, when he scored a try on debut against Barrow.
