BIOGRAPHY

Tim Jonkers by Dave Dooley:

Tim Jonkers was Amsterdam-born on the 3rd. of July 1981 with a Dutch father and English mother. He moved to the St.Helens area as a six year old attended Cowley High School. Tim signed for Saints from the Blackbrook ARL club on the 22nd. of July, 1998. He soon established himself as a first team regular combining prolific tackling with nimble footwork for a big lad and a safe pair of hands.

His debut match was against Salford on the 7th. of March, 1999 after Ellery Hanley was determined to give young players a chance to prove themselves in the Super League. It interesting to observe that Tim was still at school at the time! His first points for the club came in the home league match against Bradford on the 5th of April the same year in a 58 points to 14 Saints` victory. Tim repeated the feat one week later in the away fixture at London. That season Jonkers made two starts and came on as a substitute on 14 occasions. He even represented Ireland in the 1999 European Championship to crown an impressive debut season.

The following season Tim made 17 appearances and scored a solitary touchdown but it was a try that will live with him forever. In the last minute of the Grand Final against Wigan at Old Trafford Saints had moved into an unassailable lead when John Stankevitch danced through the Wigan defence and passed it on to Anthony Sullivan. Sully skilfully drew the last man in defence and popped up to Tim who glided across the line. The joy on Tim`s face was clearly evident to the assembled Sainthood steadily going hysterical at the right end of Old Trafford.

The 2001 season started brilliantly for Tim and the Saints with the winning of the World Club Championship at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton. Tim was on hand to play a key role coming on from the substitutes bench. Two months later celebrations were in order again as Saints dominated the Bradford Bulls in the Challenge Cup Final by 13 points to 6. Again Tim played a key role in helping to subdue the highly rated Bradford pack. So it was that Tim had won all available club honours at the tender age of twenty. The season did not end on a high note for the Saints as injuries ravaged the squad. However, Tim had the distinction that season of playing in every match for the Saints and scoring 6 tries in the process.

The 2002 season was disrupted for Tim Jonkers as he was kept on the sidelines for a couple of months with the first serious injury of his career. However, timely Tim was on hand to start the 2002 Grand Final against Bradford Bulls. The graft and mobility of Tim and the Saints pack kept them in the game until a fantastic last minute set of six tackles and a Sean Long drop goal unlocked the scores to give Saints another Super League Championship. That season Tim scored 5 tries.

The 2003 saw Tim make his 100th. appearance for the Saints in the home league game against Leeds. In 2003 Jonkers demonstrated yet again his thirst for hard work with tremendous defensive displays and barnstorming runs. An early season brace of touchdowns against Batley in the Challenge Cup and a great score against Castleford bore promising signs for the campaign, but in the end the season fizzled out for both Tim and the Saints as injuries ravaged a Saints squad perceived to be lacking in depth.

In the 2004 season Tim was loaned to Salford for the camapign. This proved to be a permanent move some 12 months later.

In his Saints` career Tim started 49 matches and was used as a substitute on 73 occasions yielding 17 tries, a couple of thousand tackles and a similar number of metres gained. In his time Tim was an extremely popular player with the fans and the rest of the squad.
