BIOGRAPHY

Jimmy Jones by SHS

A Widnes stalwart! Jimmy Jones, like Keith Elwell years later, was a lively hooker and an integral part of a Widnes team that won the Challenge Cup in 1937. He played 329 matches for the Chemics overall, from 1931-1946, scoring 11 tries and kicking one goal. Widnes did not play during the War and Jones played one game for the Saints, against Hull at Knowsley Road, on 13-09-1941. Recorder in the Reporter wrote: "Porky Davies was unable to play and McDowell volunteered to fill the unaccustomed prop position, with a new hooker, Jones, of Widnes, in Support". Needless to say Jimmy’s experience was vital in the loose as Saints scraped home to an 11-10 victory, with a brace of tries from stand-off Frank Tracey, another three-pointer from Jack Waring and a goal from Bob Grundy.

We are indebted to Stephen Fox for his help in the identification of this player.
