BIOGRAPHY

Charlie Hopley by Alex Service

The 1901 Census tells us that Charlie lived with his wife, Alice in Wilcock Street, St. Helens and was 26 years of age. Alice was three years older and from Bethnal Green in London. Born in St. Helens Charlie worked as a pattern maker in an iron foundry and played three consecutive matches in January 1896 in the left centre position. His winger was the sprinter Tom Sudlow. When the Saints signed Billy Jacques from Hull, he took up that left centre role for the rest of the campaign. As for Charlie, we do not know what happened to him in rugby terms after that season. If anyone could provide us with any further information, we would be delighted to hear from you.
