BIOGRAPHY

Freddy Hill by SHS

In the 1965-66 season, the Saints managed to alleviate their front-row problems by signing Freddie from Warrington on loan. He had previously made his debut for the Wires in the 1963-64 campaign and had made 27 appearances for the Wires. Alas his tenure in the First Team at Knowsley Road amounted to just one match, against Salford. He was one of three debutants that day, all in the pack, including Brian Hogan and Joe Robinson. Yet this game was surrounded in controversy as both sides were embroiled in a physical confrontation over the eighty minutes. At one stage, Saints’ skipper Alex Murphy was floored after a particular piece of dazzling footwork, by one of the Salford second-rowers and had to leave the pitch. Secretary Basil Lowe later announced on the tannoy that Murphy was ‘not seriously injured’, a course of action that quietened what was becoming a more and more volatile home crowd.

It is believed that Freddy later joined Blackpool Borough and actually played against Saints not long after he had played for them!
