BIOGRAPHY

Martin Hickey by Alex Service

Born and bred in Widnes, Martin lived at Lugsdale Road in the town and was signed from the junior club Widnes Rovers on 20th August 1925. A classy half-back, he had to wait almost three months for his chance in the First Team, at Dewsbury on 14th November 1925, when he was picked in the side as a result of regular scrum-half Walter Groves being in dispute. He didn’t turn out and Hickey was drafted in to show what he could do. Despite Saints losing the match, Hickey certainly won the approval of the press. According to the St.Helens Newspaper he “showed an exceptional knowledge of half-back play.” The correspondent added that “Groves’ absence may mean that St.Helens have made a valuable discovery.”

Martin made three appearances for the First Team overall, his last being against Bradford Northern on 28th November, in a 25-6 victory in Yorkshire. His half-back partner in his last two matches was Leslie Fairclough, who would have probably played at stand-off. Alas, we are unsure of what happened to Martin Hickey after that. Perhaps he stayed in the Saints’ A Team for a spell before moving back into junior football, we don’t know. If anyone has any further information about this player, we would like to hear from them.
