BIOGRAPHY

George Hibbert by SHS George Hibbert came from Fleetwood. At least that was what it said in the St. Helens Newspaper before the first match of the 1901-02 campaign at Knowsley Road. He made his debut at scrum-half, with a man called Mullineau, who later morphed into Molyneux, a forward from the Birkenhead club. Another player making his debut with the seniors that day was Kennedy, late of Runcorn. Unfortunately, the Saints lost their opening encounter 2-8, after a 0-0 scoreline at the interval. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this game was the low attendance. It should be remembered that the association code had taken a hold in the town at the time, with both St. Helens Recreation and St. Helens town attracting bigger crowds.

Hibbert made just one more appearance for the Saints, at stand-off in the home game with Runcorn on 19 October 1901, when he was partnered by Patrick Boyle. Alas, the Saints lost to the Linnets by just a solitary goal and they struggled through to the end of the season as best they could.
