BIOGRAPHY

Bill Harper by SHS

St. Helens-born hooker Bill Harper played two matches in four days for the seniors, both away from Knowsley Road. His first, at Blackpool Borough, in the Western Division Championship saw Saints draw 10-10, a magnificent achievement for the home team. The Saints pulled off a creditable 10-8 victory in Bill’s second game, however, against Oldham at Watersheddings in the Lancashire Cup semi-final. In both matches his front-row compatriots were John Arkwright and Cliff Watson.

Fast forward to the Salford programme for the match against Saints on 16th October 1966, where Bill is featured and clues are given to his future career: “Bill is yet another St. Helens boy who, due mainly to the wealth of playing talent which has prevailed at Knowsley Road for at least this last decade, has had to make his name in our game outside his native town. Billy has proved to be a rare bargain for us having joined us last season [1964-65] from Warrington on the recommendation of his former Coach, Ernie Ashcroft”.

It went on to state that Bill was a joiner by trade. If anyone has any further details about Bill’s career, please let us know.
