BIOGRAPHY

Peter Glynn by Dave Dooley

This versatile, talented livewire could play with equal comfort at half back, wing, centre or full back. A speedy, elusive player, he had superb hands, great reading of the game and brilliant anticipation to sniff out those vital tries when occasions demanded it. He signed for the Saints in the summer of 1974 and made a try-scoring debut playing stand off in the victory over Oldham on the 31st. of August, 1975. Peter`s all-round footballing skills included the ability to place kick or drop kick crucial goals for the Saints.

As Saints marched towards a treble in Glynn`s first full season, he provided Eric Ashton with adaptability and options when selecting the first team. Peter hit the national spotlight when he came on as a substitute in the 1976 Challenge Cup Final against Widnes at Wembley Stadium. After replacing veteran stand-off Billy Benyon at half time Peter helped the Saints take a commanding 12 points to 5 lead. Then Peter was on the end of a brilliant 80 yards dash from Les Jones. Geoff Pimblett and Tony Karalius opened up a gap to seal the match. Just for good measure, in the last minute of the game a sparkling piece of individual play saw Peter putting in a well judged kick that bounced up perfectly for the Widnesian to slam the ball over the tryline despite O'Neill`s last ditch tackle. This move instantly added Peter`s name to the roll of honour at Knowsley Road that is synonymous with fast open rugby. Eddie Waring`s commentary says it all:

"...And if it bounces right he`s in, and it bounces right and he`s in and he batters it down....What a moment for this boy Peter Glynn. That his second try....Came on as sub."

From those magical Wembley moments a long and successful career was mapped out for Peter Glynn. Just two weeks later Peter was selected to start in the centre position in the Premiership Final against Salford at Swinton. The match followed a similar pattern to the Challenge Cup Final with nothing separating the teams into the last quarter of the match. Alex Service takes up the commentary:

"In the 69th. minute Peter started a move with a pass that sent Roy Mathias on a scorching 35 yards run. John Mantle carried on the attack, passed the ball onto George Nicholls who delivered a superb back pass to the supporting Glynn who stormed over the Salford tryline."

This score effectively broke the Salford resistance and Saints romped in for two more tries to win by 15 points to 2.

In the 1976/7 season Peter was regularly named on the teamsheet at stand-off or centre. In the main season he collected a hat trick against Salford and in the 1977 Premiership Final, he helped kick-start a series of attacking moves that destroyed the Warrington defence. Inspired by Geoff Pimblett, the Saints went on to win their second successive Premiership Trophy by 32 points to 20.

At this point Peter was reaching the peak of his career, just at the time when the club were dipping into a period of relative decline. In the 1977/8 season finished top of the appearances chart returning 28 tries and 18 goals from 48 matches. A most impressive hat trick in the 71 points to 7 mauling of Bramley was even surpassed when Peter scored five tries in the 52 points to 14 victory over Hull. In the latter-mentioned match Peter demonstrated his refined passing skills and superb support play by cutting the Hull defence to ribbons. His 28 try haul that season was just one touchdown behind Eddie Cunningham in the club`s try-scoring charts. Peter played in the gripping 1978 Challenge Cup Final against Leeds in the team that narrowly failed to emulate their 1976 counterparts.

In the disappointing 1978/9 season Peter maintained his fine scoring form netting 19 tries. These included a well-taken hat trick against Castleford. As more youngsters were drafted into the squad more responsibility fell onto the shoulders of Peter. In 1979 Peter forced his way onto the 1979 Tour down under where he failed to get into the test team. In representative matches Peter did gain 2 caps fpor England and played for Lancashire 6 times during his Knowsley Road career.

After Geoff Pimbett`s retirement in 1979 Peter continued ti inspire his playing colleagues. In the 1979/80 season he netted three hat tricks in home matches against Widnes, Warrington and Blackpool Borough, ending the season top of the appearances list and joint top try scorer with 27 tries.

In the 1981/2 season injuries to Clive Griffiths presented Peter with the place kicking duties. He duly obliged and ended the campaign with 59 goals and 2 drop goals. An example of his prowess came in the 35 points to 4 victory over Fulham when Glynn notched up 26 points!

Peter was transferred to Salford at the end of the 1982/3 season. He had tasted success of the highest order at the start of his career and helped guide the Saints through a sticky patch at the end of the 1970s and early 1980s.
