BIOGRAPHY

Thomas Finney by Dave Dooley:
Tom Finney was born in St Helens on the 11th. of January, 1940. He was signed from Blackbrook Amateur Rugby League Club. This livewire scrum half made his first team debut in a difficult away league fixture against Hull on the 8th of April, 1961. This was the week before both teams were due to play each other in the Challenge Cup semi-final at Odsal Stadium. Tom played scrum half to John Donovan and the Saints won by 9 points to 4 in front of a crowd of 11000. The points for the Saints that day came from a try by Ken Large who also kicked two goals with Donovan chipping in with a further goal.

Tom had to wait a full year for his opportunity to don a first team shirt again. On 21st of April, 1962 Tom played scrum half at Liverpool City when the Saints prevailed by 14 points to 2 with tries from Vollenhoven (2), Alan Briers and Fred Leyland with Keith Northey kicking a solitary goal in front of a crowd of 1000 spectators. Finney`s half back partner that day was Arthur Johnson. Eleven days later Tom had his final outing for the first team against Huddersfield at Fartown in front of 6127 fans. Tom was operating in the half backs with Alan Beddow as Saints overcame the Yorkshiremen by 16 points to 9. For the record Vollenhoven (1), Northey (1) and Large (2) scored the tries with Keith Northey landing a couple of goals.

Tom played in the `A` team for much of his time at Knowsley Road. Whenever he was called upon to perform in the first team he was never found wanting. Indeed, Tom Finney collected winning pay on all his first team outings.

His brother was the famous soccer referee Jim Finney, who would have officiated in the 1966 World Cup final if England had not got through! Jim was a rugby league fan whose favourite player was Tom van Vollenhoven.
