BIOGRAPHY

Patrick Dullard by Alex Service

A pro-active member of the Saints Committee was responsible for signing this player! The St.Helens Newspaper was full of praise after his debut match against on: “Dullard, a second row forward recruited by Mr.Syd Morris after a game on the Sandbeds, was a decided success. He ran well when in possession and followed up with all the keenness Trevor Hall. Its very seldom that one finds a Committeeman searching the junior league fields but it is to be hoped that the success of this junior will prove to the remainder of the Committee that there is talent in plenty around St.Helens without going farther afield.”

Although it appears he spent much of his time as a hooker in his 22 First Team appearances, Patrick made his debut on 21st March in a 6-18 defeat at Batley. He lived, according to the Rugby League Registers, in Phythian Street St.Helens and made his final appearance during a busy Easter period in 1937-38 when the Saints played four matches in six days. Patrick played against Liverpool Stanley at Knowsley Road in a 4-17 reversal on 16th April. It should be noted that the team had just returned from two matches on the road, against Barrow on 13th April and Wigan on 15th April. On the 18th April they were at home to Leigh. What would they think of such fixtures today?

However, it is sad to relate that Patrick became a casualty of the Second World War. Lance Sergeant Patrick Dullard of the 3rd Battalion Irish Guards was killed in action on 25th October 1944, aged 34. He is buried at Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Gelderland, in the Netherlands. The Saints Heritage Society would like to acknowledge the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s web site for providing details of Patrick Dullard’s supreme sacrifice.
