|Walter Done by Alex Service |
Walter played just two matches for Saints, both as a stand-off, two years apart. His debut was at home to Millom on 27th October 1900, when the visitors pulled off a 2-4 victory at Knowsley Road. It is surprising to find that the number of players the club tried in the stand-off role that season almost came to double figures. Walter re-appears for his final match at the start of the 1902-03 campaign, when the Saints took on Bradford Northern. Once again, the homesters were defeated, this time by 11-21. It is also significant to note that a young player called Tom Hall is about to claim the stand-off role, after several years of almost constant interchange in terms of personnel in that position.
Walter was brought up in a rural environment, at Great Sutton in Cheshire. Born in 1873, he later worked as a farm labourer in Culcheth. We do not know how his connections with the Saints were established, or whether he joined them from elsewhere. We do know, however, that he passed away on 25th February 1941 and is buried in St. Helens Cemetery. He was 65 years of age.
