BIOGRAPHY

Harry Devine by SHS

Another example of a player ‘helping out’ another club during wartime! It could have been where they had been posted to on many occasions. Devine played in the front row for the Saints in the 13-8 victory against Batley at Knowsley Road. The newspaper report gave the newcomer due praise for his performance: "The forwards were doing their whack, Devine of Hull making a tremendous difference to the front row and Bradbury was certainly doing his, giving French every encouragement on the other side”.

Devine played his second match a week later against Halifax and also did well. Unfortunately it seems that there is no record of our man playing senior football for either Hull clubs, so further information is required on that score. Incidentally, since we are talking about front-row forwards, Premier, the famous correspondent did see one future star playing for Halifax on the wing that afternoon. Yet he became one of the all-time great front-rowers: “On the right [Halifax] had another strapping lad in Prescott who took a lot of stopping despite his unusual action”.
