BIOGRAPHY

John Dancer by SHS

John Dancer played a solitary match for the Saints first team on February 22nd, 1902 in the away league match against Leigh. He played prop forward in a Saints team which was defeated by 13 points to 3 in front of a crowd of 1000. Saints only try that day came from Cuthbert Pennington. The Saints played in the second tier Lancashire Senior Competition during that season, finishing in third place.

He lived in Hamer Street and worked at Sheet Works as a general labourer. John had an accident in 1932, when he fractured his left leg. This led to his death at the age of 61 some four years later. The inquest was led by the Coroner, Sir Samuel Brighouse. John was a widower by that time. In fact, he had been previously discharged from the famous St. Helens Pals regiment in September 1916, during the First World War, suffering from chronic rheumatism. He was based at a barracks in Sutton, that was exposed to the elements that brought on his health problems that meant he was no longer fit for war service. He was born in Scotland in 1880 and had five daughters and one son.

His grandson, Jeff Dancer, informs us that John walked from Glasgow to St Helens to look for work in the glass industry. A true testament to the harrowing conditions of the late nineteenth century. If you have any further information about this player, we would be glad to receive it.
