BIOGRAPHY

Many Saints fans would rate Keiron Cunningham as "the greatest ever Saints hooker" although at the time he played the hookers specialist scrum technique was no longer a part of the game. Keiron was a local product from the Thatto Heath area of the town. He was one of ten children with eldest brother, Eddie, a former Saints international. Keiron had the rare combination of speed and strength in his playing position. At a time when the Australian game was dominating the international scene, Keiron was perennially judged to be one of the worlds best players.

Keiron Cunningham was born on the 28th. of October, 1976. This was some five months after his brother Eddie had won a Challenge Cup winners medal playing for the Saints against Widnes. He was signed from Wigan St Judes ARL Club on August 24th, 1993 and made his debut in the away match against Warrington as Saints went down by 31 points to 10. In his first season Saints had another fantastic player Bernard Dwyer as their regular hooker. Keiron started the last 16 matches in the number nine jersey and it remained on his back for years to come. Early observers of this talented player noted his speed off the mark and his supreme confidence in the dummy half position. It was very much a case of "an old rugby head on young shoulders."

Keiron came into the side at a time when ambitions were high. In his first two seasons the Club mapped out their route to success by bringing established talents like Apollo Perleini, Scott Gibbs, Paul Newlove, Bobby Goulding and Karl Hammond as Super League was being launched in 1996. Such headline signings were bound to have a great impact on the playing strength of the side. However, it was the likes of Keiron, Chris Joynt and Tommy Martyn that would maintain Saints at the top of the Rugby League tree well into the next millennium. Kieron established himself at the heart of Saints defence as well as a progressive attacker, playmaker and tryscorer.

In the 1995/6 truncated Centenary season, Keiron played in all but two of the matches scoring 7 tries in 23 appearances. The inaugural 1996 Super League season established Keiron as one of the leading hookers in the game at the tender age of 20 years. A landmark game for Keiron was the 58 points to 20 home defeat of Halifax on July 14th that year when he bagged his first hat trick of tries for the club in a devastating display of aggressive dummy half play. That season also saw KC collect his first honours for the Club as the Saints played an exhilarating brand of open attacking rugby to complete the Challenge Cup and Championship double for the first time in thirty years. Kieron was on had to score in that all-time great Wembley final, against the Bradford Bulls, as the Yorkshiremens tryline received an aerial bombardment from Bobby "the bomber" Goulding. His 13 tries that season indicated his potential as a clinical finisher and the fact that he started every game for the Saints demonstrated his durability and fitness.

The following season saw Keiron collect his second Challenge Cup winners medal, again the victims were Bradford Bulls. He went on to make 36 appearances that season scoring 11 tries. The 1998 was somewhat disappointing for the Saints as indifferent and inconsistent form left the trophy cabinet bare for the first time in the super league era. Still Keiron maintained his form and scored eight tries from 23 starts and one game as a substitute.

The 1999 campaign brought a new coach to Knowsley Road in the shape of the legendary Ellery Hanley. Keiron described Ellery as, "A good team builder and motivator." His 34 appearances (joint top with Apollo) and 12 tries created the base for some top performances as Saints won their first Grand Final against Bradford in a pulsating Final against Bradford Bulls by 8 points to 6.

In the 2000 season Keiron scored a brace of tries in no fewer than six occasions with a total of 16 tries from 27 starts and one substitute appearance. Another top performance in the Grand Final destruction of Wigan brought Keiron his third Championship memento.

When asked which was his most memorable match to date Keiron immediately jumped in with the World Club Championship game against Brisbane Broncos at the start of the 2001 season at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton. Keiron was instrumental in holding out a strong phase of play by the Broncos after the interval prior Saints famous comeback to take the game with two drop goals by Paul Sculthorpe and Sean Long at the death. A third Challenge Cup victory over the Bradford Bulls at a rain soaked Twickenham Stadium included a personal milestone. Keirons beautiful near the ground collection of a Sean Long grubber kick enlisted KC amongst the small band of Saints players to have scored in more than one try for the Saints in different Challenge Cup Finals. That season was to be Keirons most productive in try-scoring terms as he netted 22 touchdowns from 34 appearances. He finished second in the Club try-scoring charts behind Paul Sculthorpe that season.

It was during this period that Keiron was being offered considerable amounts of money to sign for the Welsh Rugby Union team. "At one point I was given 24 hours to decide whether or not I was going to sign. I must say I am very glad I decided to stay in Rugby League," stated Keiron at an ISSA meeting. Although the Club were through the floor financially, we all know the consequences of selling your best players - ask anyone from Widnes!

Keiron started the 2002 season with a hat trick of tries against Oldham on February 10th on the rain-sodden Stalybrdge Celtic ground. The bulk of Darren Britt and Barry Ward had joined the Saints by then making a very substantial Saints front row. On a sunny Sunday afternoon in May, Keiron scored his 100th try for the Saints in a 44 points to 36 victory over Warrington at the Wilderspool Stadium characteristically following up a midfield break to dive over in front of a stand full of jubilant Saints fans. The ultimate conclusion to the season occurred in the Grand Final against a now paranoid Bradford Bulls outfit as a Sean Long drop goal sealed a famous victory in the last minute. Such celebrations were short-lived however as Keiron suffered a serious elbow injury playing for Great Britain against the Kiwis at the end of that season.

As Keiron sat out on the start of the 2003 season, he reflected on his career to date. He rates Ian Millward as the best technical coach he has worked under. He already has signed a longer-term contract to remain at Knowsley Road and he has already stated that he would like to see out his career with the Saints. This good news for all Saints fans already provokes ones thoughts as to what might be achieved at the Saints by this decision.

In the 2004 season Saints and KC had made a whirlwind start to the campaign playing some of the finest rugby ever witnessed at Knowsley Road. The Challenge Cup road to Cardiff saw Saints collecting the biggest scalps in the game. A stunning away victory against Bradford was followed up with home victories against Leeds and Hull both of whom showed tremendous resistance. A high flying and confident Huddersfield team were dumped by forty points in the glorious Warrington sunshine on semi-final day. Keiron stood tall throughout this period exhibiting great power in attack and remained the cornerstone of the Saints defence. The reward at the start of his testimonial season was a fourth Challenge Cup winners medal as Saints prevailed over the old enemy by 32 points to 16 in the Costa del Cardiff.

At the end of that campaign of 2004 he had already made over 300 appearances for the club and scored 129 tries (Top on the Saints all-time forwards try-scoring chart and fifteenth overall). Keiron wisely decided to rest at the end of the campaign and not play in the Tri-Nations tournament.

Keirons form continued at a consistently high level over the next two campaigns and although team injuries had robbed KC of yet more medals in 2005, the 2006 season saw Keiron dominant in the middle of the Saints attack and defence. He made his 350th appearance for the club in the comfortable home league victory over Wigan that season. As Saints cruised through the campaign at the top of the table, more silverware beckoned for Keiron and his team-mates. A fifth Challenge Cup winners medal in the 42 points to 12 victory over Huddersfield crowned another great campaign as Saints finished the league season 8 points clear at the top of the table. A fitting finale to the campaign saw Keiron wrap up the Super League title, his fifth, when he plunged over the line to notch up his 150th try for the club. KC declined the opportunity for further international honours with the GB touring party to Australia in 2006, deciding instead to concentrate on family matters and give his body a well earned rest.

The 2007 Challenge Cup final against Catalans Dragons at the new Wembley stadium witnessed Keiron lifting the trophy for the Saints. His leadership and on the field organisation was a key factor in this success. KC repeated the feat one year later as the Saints won the Challenge Cup for the third year in succession. Keiron was also named in the Dream Team for the seventh time. In 2009 the town of St Helens paid tribute to the exploits of this local hero with plans to erect a bronze statue of Keiron on a prominent site in the town centre, a fitting tribute to one of our all time great players.

The 2009 season proved to be a roller coaster season for the Saints. The ride however, ultimately ended in disappointment as the Saints trophy cabinet was laid bare for the first time since the 2003 campaign. Some sparkling performances were punctuated with below par matches as the club shaped a new team for the future and youth was given its head.

Captain Cunningham led the team brilliantly on the field through this tumultuous campaign. Even during matches when Kieron was given his mandatory respite before and after half time, it became evident how much his presence counted on the field. His contract extension for the 2010 season was warmly greeted by all supporters of the club.

His final season coincided with the leaving of our spiritual home, Knowsley Road. It would prove to be a stanza of high emotion. Keiron add to our glorious history by scoring the last try in a league game at the stadium. As ever he was inspirational in the playoffs as a young team battled to Old Trafford again. However it was not to be a fairy tale ending for the great KC as the auld enemy proved too strong on the night. The club rightly appointed Keiron to the coaching staff in 2011 and in may ways the King was an embodiment of the Saintly spirit that helped guide the team through the transition of playing a season at Widnes and through to our new home at Langtree Park.
