BIOGRAPHY

Albert Cooper by Alex Service

The history of this player is quite intriguing. He was, apparently, born in Canada and lived in Bryn Street when he played for the Saints. The St.Helens Reporter after the match against Salford at the Willows early in 1938 talks about "Cooper, the Canadian, who was tried out against Barney Hudson distinguished himself with his glorious tackling in the first half but he rather faded out of the picture in the second period."

Wing threequarter Cooper is described as a newcomer in the report. By 5th January 1937, the the local press made the following reference to this player: "I understand that Cooper, the Canadian boy would like a trial at City Road, but the Recs are not in a position to give him one."

There is further information about Albert in the informative booklet called They Played for Wigan, published in 1992 by Mike Latham and Robert Gate. Apparently, Albert started at Wigan in 1936 and made two appearances, scoring two tries. His origin is listed as the Hamilton Olympic Rugby Union Club, in Ontario.

He remains the only Canadian to play for the Saints, if indeed he was born over there. If anyone has any further information about this player, we would like to hear from you.
