BIOGRAPHY

Harold Clough by Alex Service

The surname is of course familiar to Saints fans of a more modern vintage and yes, Harold is related to the more modern day forward Paul Clough. Harold was born and bred in the Windle City area of St. Helens. He first played rugby league at Windleshaw School and later trained as a joiner with the local council, before serving with the RAF in Egypt during the Second World War. Harold had trials with the Saints and played in a number of matches for the club during the conflict, before signing for Dewsbury in 1947.

Harold was a real tough customer at stand off half and spent four seasons at Crown Flatt before joining the new Doncaster club, playing in their first ever match against Wakefield Trinity in 1951. After a short stint playing for Leigh, he retired to concentrate on his business. Journalist Denis Whittle wrote an entertaining obituary when Harold passed away at the age of 83 in 2005. Here are some of the highlights, which suggest that Harold was not only a popular local businessman, but a real character as well: “Harold Clough, of Bishop Road ran the Brighter Homes electrical goods shop in Duke Street for more than 40 years. He was survived by his wife, Vera, daughters Glenis, Sue and Gill, plus seven grandchildren. A veritable bundle of fun who liked nothing better than a flutter on the gee gees, amiable Harold also enjoyed a swift half of beer at his favourite watering hole, the Unison Social club, just a drop kick from his front door. He was always ready to talk rugby or issues of the day in his Alladins Cave emporium, ever awash with eye catching lampshades, electrical gadgets and countless other domestic requisites for the discerning householder.”
