BIOGRAPHY

Robert Carter by Alex Service

Not much is known about this particular player and details are somewhat sketchy. Carter was born in London but moved to Cumberland when his father was transferred from West Ham FC to Barrow FC. He was a front-rower. That is indisputable, as the Players signing on registers reveal. Robert signed on twice for the club, on 31st August 1935 and 1st January 1939. Carter made his debut at Swinton in a 46-3 reversal in the league match on 28th August 1935 and his final match in Saints’ colours was equally unfortunate a 28-0 reversal at Widnes on 29th August 1936. The Saints’ front row that day was McDonald, Dullard and Carter. The St.Helens Newspaper gives us some more information about this player after he had left the club when the Saints went up to Barrow: “Another old friend at Craven Park was Carter, the former Saints’ prop forward. He was with his father, who was at one time a prominent goalkeeper with West Ham and Barrow.”

This is as much as we know about the player as it stands. Any further information would be most welcome.
