BIOGRAPHY

Gerald Barnes by SHS

Gerald was a forward signed from local rivals St.Helens Recs, who played only one First Team game for the club. Yet this particular match is of interest. It was against Salford on 26th April 1926 and the Saints won easily by 23-0. This was, in fact, a replay of the original fixture on 23rd January, which Saints won 13-10. Salford lodged an objection to the result, claiming that the winning try by Les Fairclough after 72 minutes was from a double movement. There were no action replays and ‘big screens’ in those days. Their objection was upheld and the replayed fixture was the last of the 1925-26 season for both clubs. It could be argued that justice was done. As for Gerald Barnes, not much more is known after his one and only match, except to say he was struck off the club’s register in September 1928. Was he the brother of Berlin Barnes, who also played for the Saints and the Recs? If anyone has any further information about this player, we would be glad to receive it.
